Serving Tables, Solving Problems

Read Acts 6:1-7 KJV Power to Witness: The Book of ActsWeek of December 15, 2027

The church in Jerusalem was growing fast, and growth brought problems. Widows who spoke Greek felt their needs were being overlooked in the daily food distribution, while widows who spoke Hebrew were served. Feelings were hurt, and murmuring began. Any church family with members from different cultures can understand this. How did the apostles respond? They did not ignore the complaint or blame anyone. Instead, they found a wise, Spirit-led solution. This passage shows us how God’s people can face conflict and come out stronger.

Facing the Problem Honestly

Luke does not hide the trouble. There arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected. Some of the newer believers came from Jewish families who had lived outside Israel. They spoke Greek and may have felt like outsiders. The complaint was real. Caring for widows matters to God, and pure religion includes looking after the fatherless and widows in their affliction (James 1:27). Yet murmuring can poison a church if it is left alone. Paul tells us to do all things without murmurings and disputings (Philippians 2:14). The apostles did not pretend things were fine. They called the whole multitude together and dealt with the issue openly. Healthy churches do not avoid hard conversations. They bring problems into the light and look for solutions that honor God and protect people.

Is there a complaint you have been grumbling about privately, and who is the right person you will speak to about it kindly this week?

The Right People in Place

The apostles said it was not right for them to leave the word of God to serve tables. They were not too proud to serve. They knew their main calling was prayer and the ministry of the word. So they asked the church to choose seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom. Long before, Jethro had given Moses similar advice to share the load with able men (Exodus 18:17-21). Every believer has a gift to use for others (1 Peter 4:10). Even serving food required spiritual people. Look at the names chosen, such as Stephen, Philip and Nicanor. All seven had Greek names. The church likely chose leaders from the very group that felt neglected. That showed trust and humility. There are different gifts, but the same Lord and the same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-6).

What practical need in our church matches a gift God has given you, and whom will you talk to this week about stepping in to help?

When Servants Serve, the Word Spreads

The apostles prayed and laid their hands on the seven. Then the word of God increased, and the number of disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem. Even a great company of the priests became obedient to the faith. A problem that could have divided the church became a door for growth. When everyone does their part, the whole body moves forward. Jesus Himself came not to be served but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). No task in God’s house is too small when it is done for Him. Paul tells us to work heartily, as to the Lord and not to men (Colossians 3:23). Some of these seven table servants, like Stephen and Philip, later became mighty witnesses. Faithfulness in small things often prepares us for greater things (Luke 16:10).

Which small, unseen task will you do this week at home or at church with all your heart, as if you were doing it for Jesus Himself?

Conclusion

Acts 6 shows us a church that faced a real problem with honesty, wisdom and prayer. The apostles kept their focus on prayer and the word, and Spirit-filled servants met the practical need. As a result, the gospel spread even further. Our Lord Jesus is the greatest Servant of all. He washed feet, fed crowds and gave His life for us. When we follow His example and serve one another in love, our differences become a strength and the word of God keeps growing.
