You Must Be Born Again

Read John 3:1-21 KJV Knowing Jesus: The Gospel of JohnWeek of November 25, 2026

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. He knew the Scriptures, prayed often and lived a careful life. Yet he came to Jesus at night with questions. Jesus surprised him by saying that no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again. This conversation includes the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3:16. It reminds us that being religious is not the same as having new life. Whether you grew up in church or are new to faith, this passage speaks to you.

Religion Is Not Enough

Nicodemus opened politely. He called Jesus a teacher come from God. But Jesus went straight to the heart: unless a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3:1-3). Nicodemus had good works, a good name and a good education. Still, he needed a brand-new start. Isaiah says that even our righteous acts are like filthy rags before a holy God (Isaiah 64:6). Paul explains that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). This is humbling news for church people. Attending services, giving and serving are good, but they cannot make a dead heart alive. Only God can do that. The good news is that He offers new birth freely to anyone who comes to Him in faith, whether they are a leader like Nicodemus or a newcomer.

What good thing in your life are you tempted to trust instead of Christ, and how will you turn that trust back to Him this week?

Born of the Spirit

Nicodemus was confused. How can a grown man enter his mother’s womb again? Jesus explained that He meant a birth of water and of the Spirit (John 3:4-8). Like the wind, the Spirit cannot be seen, but you can see what He does. God had promised long before to give His people a new heart and to put His Spirit within them (Ezekiel 36:26-27). Peter says we are born again not of corruptible seed, but by the word of God, which lives and abides forever (1 Peter 1:23). New birth is not turning over a new leaf. It is God giving you a new life from above. Those who are born again begin to love what God loves. They hunger for His Word, they hate sin, and they want to please Him. The Holy Spirit is the One who makes this change real.

Look and Live

Jesus pointed Nicodemus back to a story he knew well. When Israel was bitten by snakes in the desert, Moses lifted a bronze serpent on a pole. Anyone who looked at it lived (Numbers 21:8-9). In the same way, Jesus said, the Son of man must be lifted up, so whoever believes in Him will have eternal life (John 3:14-16). He was speaking of the cross. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. Salvation is not a reward for the strong. It is a gift for those who look to Jesus in faith. Yet Jesus also warned that light has come, and some love darkness more, because their deeds are evil (John 3:19-21). The choice is real. Looking to Jesus means stepping into His light, with nothing hidden.

Who could you share John 3:16 with this week, and how will you explain it to them in your own simple words?

Conclusion

Jesus told a respected teacher that he needed to start over. Religion could not save him. Only the Spirit could give him new life, and that life comes through looking in faith to the Son lifted up on the cross. Later in John’s Gospel, Nicodemus appears again, helping to bury Jesus with care. The man who came by night stepped into the light. God’s love still reaches out to the whole world through Jesus. You must be born again, and you can be, by trusting Him today.
