The Lord Will Provide

Read Genesis 22:1-19 KJV In the Beginning: GenesisWeek of March 24, 2027

Genesis 22 is one of the most moving chapters in the Bible. After years of waiting, Abraham finally had Isaac, the son of promise. Then God asked the unthinkable: take your son, your only son, whom you love, and offer him on a mountain I will show you. The chapter is hard to read, but it is full of faith and grace. God never intended Isaac to die. He was testing Abraham’s heart and painting a picture of the gospel. Here we learn that the Lord sees ahead and provides exactly what is needed.

Faith Under Testing

The passage begins by saying God did tempt Abraham (Genesis 22:1). In older English, tempt here means test. God was not luring Abraham into sin. He was proving and strengthening his faith. Abraham did not argue or delay. He rose up early in the morning, split the wood, and set out with Isaac (Genesis 22:3). Hebrews explains what was in his heart. Abraham believed that God was able to raise Isaac up, even from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19). Tests reveal what we truly trust. Sometimes God asks us to hold loosely the very gifts He has given, such as a child, a career or a dream. James says the person who endures testing will receive the crown of life (James 1:12). Testing is not God’s rejection. It is His refining.

God Will Provide a Lamb

As they climbed, Isaac carried the wood, and Abraham carried the fire and the knife. Isaac asked where the lamb was. Abraham replied, "God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering" (Genesis 22:7-8). Those words went further than Abraham knew. Centuries later, John the Baptist pointed to Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Like Isaac, Jesus carried wood up a hill. Unlike Isaac, no one took His place. He was the substitute. Mount Moriah is where Solomon later built the temple in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 3:1), the city where Jesus would one day die. God was writing the story of our salvation long before Calvary.

Provision on the Mountain

At the last moment, the angel of the Lord called out and stopped Abraham’s hand. Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a thicket by its horns, and he offered it instead of his son (Genesis 22:11-13). He named the place Jehovah-jireh, which means the Lord will provide, or the Lord will see to it (Genesis 22:14). God’s provision came at the point of obedience, on the mountain, not at the bottom. Paul reasons that if God did not spare His own Son, He will surely give us with Him all things (Romans 8:32). God does not promise every wish, but He does promise to supply all our need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). He is never late.

Conclusion

Abraham’s test shows a faith that obeys, a God who provides, and a picture of the cross. Isaac was spared because a ram died in his place. We are spared because Jesus, God’s only Son, died in ours. God asked Abraham for his son, but in the end God gave His own (John 3:16). Whatever mountain you are climbing, remember that the Lord sees ahead, and He has already provided what matters most.
