A Life Worthy of Praise

Read Proverbs 31:10-31 KJV Faith That Works: James, Proverbs and Our Blessed HopeWeek of September 27, 2028

Proverbs ends with a poem about a woman of strength and character. In Hebrew, each verse begins with the next letter of the alphabet, an A to Z of godly living. Some women have felt crushed by this passage, as if it were an impossible checklist. But it is better read as a portrait of wisdom lived out in daily life. Her faith shows up in her home, her work, her community and her words. Men and women, young and old, can all learn from her what a life worthy of praise looks like.

Trustworthy and Hardworking

The poem opens with a question: who can find a virtuous woman? Her worth is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10). Her husband trusts her completely, and she does him good all the days of her life (Proverbs 31:11-12). Then we see her at work. She rises while it is still night, buys a field, plants a vineyard and keeps her lamp burning late (Proverbs 31:13-19). She is skilled, wise with money and willing to work hard. Many mothers and grandmothers in our church have lived like this, running homes, businesses and ministries with great strength. Scripture honors such diligence. Paul tells us to do our work heartily, as to the Lord and not to people (Colossians 3:23).

Who in your life has been trustworthy and faithful like this, and how will you thank or honor them this week?

Open Hands, Kind Words

Her strength is not only for her own household. She stretches out her hand to the poor and needy, and she prepares for winter so she does not fear the snow (Proverbs 31:20-21). Strength and honour are her clothing, and she can rejoice in the days to come. When she speaks, wisdom and the law of kindness are on her tongue (Proverbs 31:25-26). She is generous, prepared, confident and kind. This is the same wisdom James described, a faith that cares for the needy and keeps itself pure (James 1:27). Whether you are a man or a woman, God wants your strength to serve others and your words to be gentle and wise. A strong life is a giving life.

What is one kind word or generous act you can offer to someone in need this week?

The Fear of the Lord

Her children rise up and call her blessed, and her husband praises her (Proverbs 31:28-29). Then the poem reveals her secret. Charm can deceive and beauty fades, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised (Proverbs 31:30). Her strength, work and kindness all flow from reverence for God. The book of Proverbs began by saying that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (Proverbs 1:7), and it ends with a life that shows it. The world praises looks and success. God praises a heart that honors Him. Peter says the hidden beauty of a meek and quiet spirit is of great price in God’s sight (1 Peter 3:4).

What is one way you can put more effort into inner character than outward appearance this week?

Conclusion

Proverbs 31 paints a life of faithful work, open-handed kindness and deep reverence for God. It is not a weight to crush us but a picture of wisdom in action. No one lives it perfectly. Jesus is the true Wisdom of God, and through faith in Him we are made new and given His Spirit to grow in these qualities. Honor the faithful people God has placed around you, and let the fear of the Lord become the root of your own life.
