The Word Became Flesh

Read John 1:1-18 KJV Knowing Jesus: The Gospel of JohnWeek of November 4, 2026

John does not open his Gospel with a manger or a family tree. He takes us back before the world was made. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God. Then John tells us something amazing: this eternal Word stepped into our world as a real man. His name is Jesus. These eighteen verses are like the front door to the whole book. Many people today see Jesus as only a good teacher or a prophet. John wants us to see far more, and to believe.

The Eternal Word Is God

John says the Word was with God and was God (John 1:1-2). Jesus did not begin in Bethlehem. He has always been. All things were made by Him, and nothing was made without Him (John 1:3). Paul agrees that all things were created by Him and hold together in Him (Colossians 1:16-17). Hebrews adds that He upholds all things by the word of His power (Hebrews 1:3). This truth matters for your daily faith. The One you pray to is not a small helper on the side. He is the Maker of the stars, the oceans and you. When life feels shaky, you can lean on Someone who was there before the beginning and will be there after the end. Knowing Jesus starts with worship. Before we bring Him our list of needs, we bow before who He truly is.

What one worry can you bring to Jesus in prayer this week while reminding yourself that He made and holds all things?

Light That Darkness Cannot Overcome

In Jesus was life, and that life was the light of men (John 1:4-9). The darkness has never been able to put that light out. John the Baptist came only to point people to it. Sadly, many did not receive Jesus, not even His own people. But to all who receive Him and believe on His name, He gives power to become the sons of God (John 1:10-13). Notice how this new birth happens. It is not by family line, good effort or human willpower. It is God’s own work in the heart. Later Jesus said that whoever follows Him will not walk in darkness (John 8:12). Paul says God has shone in our hearts to show us His glory in the face of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6). You do not have to stay in the dark about God, about yourself or about your future.

Full of Grace and Truth

Here is the heart of the passage: the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:14). God did not shout at us from far away. He moved into the neighborhood. Jesus took on a real body, felt hunger and tiredness, and humbled Himself to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:6-8). John says we have all received from His fullness, grace upon grace. The law came through Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ (John 1:16-17). No one has ever seen God, yet the Son has made Him known (John 1:18). If you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. He is full of grace, so He welcomes sinners. He is full of truth, so He never pretends sin does not matter. In Him, both meet perfectly.

Who in your family or workplace needs to see both grace and truth from you this week, and how will you show it?

Conclusion

John 1 shows us that Jesus is the eternal God, the true light, and the Word made flesh. He was before all things, yet He came close enough to touch. He shines into our darkness and gives the right to become God’s children to all who receive Him. And He shows us the Father, full of grace and truth. The question John puts before every reader is simple: will you receive Him? Knowing Jesus is not just knowing facts about Him. It is welcoming Him as Lord and Savior.
